Any part-time job will reveal to you a universal truth: we all have insurmountable character flaws ranging from an unhealthy need to fit in to failure to be able to use a public restroom. The difference between the people working as real estate agents and those of us who become recording artists is how we deal with these flaws. Hip-Hop artist Eye Que of the “It’s Alive Hip Hop Show” parlayed his dysfunctional family life into an aspiring recording career. He stays true to his roots by exploiting the things in his past that have turned him into the 20 year-old man-child he is today. Eye Que’s lyrics center around his father leaving him at age 6, the lack of employment options for America’s college graduates and the difficulty in getting his security deposit back after his rental agreement expires.

“…a job is like a gym and I’m not working out, I’m struggling with no help from the government.
I’ve been in college for a minute, trying to be a scholar, now I’m feeling like my father, why should I bother?”

Eye Que’s music is emotionally purging. He casts his problems into the music and raises the listeners’ spirits. In addition to a very strong a positive set of lyrics, Eye Que was backed by a solid singer who sang chorus on the song Rock Bottom. This writer was struck by the complete absence of references to drugs and weapons in the music.

Eye Que’s childhood years weren’t the kind many people would want to emulate. By the time he was 11 years old he had lived in Northridge, Long Beach, Pasadena, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Peroria, and finally ended up in a foster home in Palmdale, California.

Finally in 2001 Eye Que moved in with his grandmother and his life stabilized. He went back to school and started composing poetry and working on his music career. During his senior year he joined a group of rappers Rob J, J.HITM, Ryteous, And Deja’ Vu and recorded an album. Eye Que is now a student at Chico State and working on a solo album.

In addition to Eye Que, there were a number of horn players, a drummer and a DJ. All of which took great joy in getting down and encouraging the multi-racial crowd to get their hands up and dance. This writer even spied several of the Graduate’s security guards smiling and bobbing their heads to the music.

Eye Que has earned many followers in Chico. This was evident by the many audience members who were cheering for him between songs and filming him on stage. Chico may be in a recession but the Butte County School of Hip Hop still has a surplus of worthy graduates.
